The platform addresses a long-standing inefficiency in the nonprofit sector: the reliance on disconnected tech stacks and fragmented data silos. While many existing fundraising tools function as patchwork systems assembled through acquisitions, CharityEngine operates on a unified data model. This structural architecture enables the AI to perform tasks—such as launching win-back campaigns for at-risk donors or drafting grant proposals—without requiring the user to toggle between different software modules.
Philip Schmitz, CEO of CharityEngine, argues that the effectiveness of AI is intrinsically tied to the underlying system. According to Schmitz, competitors struggle because their software is stitched together, creating technical barriers that prevent true automation. By contrast, Copilot is infused directly into the platform’s core, allowing it to act on donor data rather than merely reporting on it. The tool is available to the company’s network of over 1,000 nonprofits, which have collectively raised more than $10 billion to date.
