Lawsuit Challenges Transfer of Texas Wildlife Refuge Land to SpaceX

The legal complaint, filed by the Center for Biological Diversity, Save RGV, the Carrizo/Comecrudo Nation of Texas, and the South Texas Environmental Justice Network, centers on a proposed land swap. Plaintiffs contend that the deal would result in a net loss of over 715 acres of protected habitat in exchange for 683 acres of private land. Critics argue that the swap fails to meet the legal mandate that such transfers must provide tangible improvements to wildlife conservation.

Concerns are mounting over the environmental impact of SpaceX operations in a region that serves as a vital corridor for endangered species, including ocelots. Laiken Jordahl of the Center for Biological Diversity characterized the deal as a giveaway of public assets to the world’s richest individual, while Mary Angela Branch of Save RGV warned that the project threatens to permanently sever a corridor established by Congress in 1979. Beyond the litigation, public backlash is intensifying, with more than 3,400 letters of opposition submitted to federal regulators to date.
