She noted that she never anticipated the show’s longevity and reached a point where she felt ready to take ownership of her own projects. Observing the work of her husband, Sam Esmail, and executive producer John Wells provided the final push she needed to pivot toward building her own production company, Composition 8.

The path to her exit followed a grueling multi-year struggle for pay equity. While Rossum initially accepted a lower salary than co-star William H. Macy, she spent five years advocating for equal compensation as her role evolved into a co-lead position. Her requests were repeatedly denied until public pressure in 2016 forced a resolution, granting her pay parity for her final two seasons. Following her departure in 2018, the atmosphere on set shifted significantly. Emma Kenney, who played her on-screen sister, later remarked on the complex dynamic of their working relationship, noting that the set environment changed following Rossum’s exit.
