While government and research interest in quantum computing continues to surge, widespread enterprise value remains years away. New guidance from Info-Tech Research Group suggests that while quantum annealing offers current optimization benefits, true gate-based commercial breakthroughs are unlikely to materialize until at least 2032.

The comparison between the rapid scalability of artificial intelligence and the future trajectory of quantum computing is fundamentally flawed, according to Brian Jackson, principal research director at Info-Tech. Unlike AI, quantum technology is highly specialized and significantly more difficult to implement. Current practical applications are limited to niche scientific exploration, such as molecular interactions in pharmaceutical manufacturing, rather than broad corporate utility.

Strategic Preparation Over Immediate Adoption

Info-Tech identifies five primary domains where quantum potential resides: simulation, optimization, sampling, AI acceleration, and decryption. However, the firm warns that organizational readiness—including a lack of specialized talent and infrastructure—remains a major barrier to progress. Instead of rushing into unproven investments, the research group advises CIOs to adopt a structured, three-step framework: establishing a baseline understanding of the technology, identifying specific problems that align with quantum strengths, and rigorously evaluating feasibility before committing resources. By focusing on targeted use cases today, firms can better position themselves to capitalize on the technology as it matures over the next decade.
