Cosmo Launches School-Fi to Balance Classroom Focus with Safety

As school districts across the United States increasingly implement strict cellphone bans, Denver-based tech firm Cosmo is introducing School-Fi. The geolocation-based system automatically restricts smartwatch functionality during school hours, attempting to resolve the friction between maintaining student focus in the classroom and ensuring parental peace of mind during emergencies.

The new feature, launching in late July, integrates with Cosmo’s JrTrack smartwatches to identify when a student enters or leaves a school campus. By leveraging HaloGPS technology, the system shifts devices into a limited, distraction-free mode while allowing parents to configure specific safety and communication parameters. This transition turns the smartwatch into an analog-style time-telling accessory, effectively aligning with the 'away for the day' policies currently gaining traction in over 35 states.

Russell York, CEO and founder of Cosmo, noted that the technology addresses a growing dilemma for families who feel forced to choose between school compliance and safety. With 90% of parents citing emergency access as their primary reason for wanting their children to carry devices, School-Fi serves as an automated middle ground. To further assist with school policy compliance, the company is also releasing a School Explorer Clip, which allows the JrTrack 5 SE to be attached to a backpack rather than worn on the wrist.

The system arrives as part of a broader update to the Cosmo parent platform, which will be available to both new JrTrack 5 SE users and existing customers. The JrTrack 5 SE is priced at $129.99, with subscription plans starting at $9.99 per month. By automating the device's behavior based on location, Cosmo aims to remove the mental load from parents while providing educators with a predictable, non-disruptive way to manage technology in the learning environment.
