Toyota Joins Daimler and Volvo in Hydrogen Fuel Cell Venture

The deal formalizes a preliminary arrangement established earlier this spring, aiming to accelerate the development and manufacturing of heavy-duty fuel cell systems. By pooling resources, the partners plan to scale production and enhance their competitive edge in the hydrogen sector. The alliance also intends to work alongside industry associations to bolster the broader hydrogen supply chain and infrastructure, which remains a critical barrier to widespread adoption.

Despite the shared ownership, cellcentric will maintain its status as an independent, autonomous entity. It will continue to supply fuel cell technology for a diverse range of applications, including on-road and off-road transport, rail equipment, and stationary power generation. For all other business operations, Volvo, Daimler Truck, and Toyota will remain independent competitors. The transaction is slated to close by late 2026 or early 2027, with Volvo Group officials noting that the deal is not expected to materially affect their current financial position.
