The 38-year-old artist described his state during the tour as a spiral of alcoholism and substance dependency that left him feeling isolated and resistant to professional intervention. Initially, Peck viewed his mandated time in rehab with skepticism, believing himself to be an exception to the need for treatment. He processed his frustration through songwriting, creating tracks like 'Rehab Blues' as a defensive mechanism before eventually embracing the recovery process.
This period of personal unraveling now forms the narrative core of his fourth studio album, 'Mule,' set for release on September 18. Rather than distancing himself from the trauma, Peck opted for a chronological retelling of his darkest year. The record functions as a candid account of his struggle, eschewing any attempt to sanitize the experience. Following his recovery and a successful Broadway run in 'Cabaret,' the musician is set to return to the stage on the same day as his album launch, headlining the Hollywood Bowl to kick off his 'Man Turned Mule Tour.'
