David Jonsson Named as New Black Panther for Third Franchise Entry

Director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige introduced David Jonsson as the next Black Panther during San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. Stepping into the mantle as the adult son of the late Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, Jonsson joins the franchise ahead of the third installment’s scheduled 2028 release.

The announcement marks a significant narrative pivot for the studio. While Letitia Wright’s Shuri previously assumed the superhero identity in 2022 following the death of Chadwick Boseman, Jonsson’s arrival as T’Challa’s son establishes a new bloodline focus for the series. Standing before a packed crowd at the convention center, the 32-year-old British actor expressed gratitude to the production team and his new castmates, including returning stars Wright and Winston Duke.

Jonsson brings a rising profile to the project, having recently appeared in Alien: Romulus and the HBO drama series Industry. Although plot specifics remain closely guarded, Marvel confirmed that Coogler will return to direct the film, which is slated for a December 15, 2028, theatrical debut. This casting decision arrives amid reports of a private legal dispute between Boseman’s brothers and his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman, regarding the management of the late actor’s estate. Marvel has opted to move forward by introducing a new generation, effectively bypassing the need to recast the original T’Challa while keeping the character's legacy central to the Wakandan mythos.
