The state harvested over 1 billion pounds of sunflowers from 500,000 acres in 2025, cementing its dominance in the industry. This year, the North Dakota Department of Commerce has launched an interactive 2026 Sunflower Map to help travelers track bloom conditions in real-time, ensuring visitors reach peak color while navigating local dining and lodging. Sara Otte Coleman, director of the state’s tourism division, noted that while the visual spectacle draws the crowds, the experience is designed to highlight the broader agricultural heritage and small-town charm of the region.
Beyond the fields, travelers can sample local sunflower-based products, including GIANTS seeds from Wahpeton and nut-free SunButter spreads produced in Fargo. North Dakota Tourism is also placing "Be Sunny" mailboxes at select locations to offer complimentary seed samples. Whether visiting the Badlands near Medora or exploring the riverfront trails of Bismarck, the season encourages a tour through the state's distinct landscapes, culminating in National Sunflower Day on August 1, 2026.
