Retail Tech Weekly: From Tesco Deliveries to Humanoid Robotics

This week, the retail technology landscape shifted as Tesco expanded its rapid delivery footprint via Uber Eats and Deliveroo, while the robotics sector saw a massive $1.35 billion valuation for Humanoid. Meanwhile, Waitrose reached a digital milestone and Ocado secured a significant new automated fulfillment contract.

Tesco is set to bolster its Whoosh rapid delivery service through new partnerships with Uber Eats and Deliveroo, launching this summer. The move builds on the retailer’s existing infrastructure, which already services 70% of the UK population. Customers will gain the ability to collect Clubcard points while utilizing these third-party platforms.

In the robotics space, UK-based firm Humanoid secured $152 million in Series A funding, pushing its post-money valuation to $1.35 billion. The capital will support the deployment of industrial robots through partnerships with firms like Siemens and Bosch. Concurrently, Berlin-based Sereact added Zalando to its investor roster as it develops Cortex 2.0, an AI operating system designed for warehouse automation.

Infrastructure and store-level technology also saw significant movement. Waitrose has now rolled out SOLUM electronic shelf labels to 200 stores, modernizing its pricing and product information management. Shell has tapped RELEX Solutions to optimize store forecasting and replenishment across its UK network of 550 convenience stores, which includes Little Waitrose and Co-op branded locations.

Strategic personnel changes and regional expansions rounded out the week. B&Q appointed former Amazon leader Laura Karsunky as its new Director of Retail Media, signaling a push toward more integrated supplier data. In the Middle East, Majid Al Futtaim became one of the first regional entities to enable Jaywan card acceptance across its network of over 200 physical destinations, including retail, leisure, and hotels.
