The site at Indurent Park Stoke Central will feature Ocado’s Re:Imagined technology, including 600s bots and automated freezer systems. Industry observers have pointed to Lidl GB as the potential partner, noting the discounter’s aggressive expansion and its recent move to pilot Click & Collect services in Ireland. While Lidl previously abandoned online delivery due to cost constraints, a large-scale automated facility could align with a strategy to capture a larger share of the weekly grocery market.
Ocado’s deal follows its recent partnership with Asda, which aims to overhaul the supermarket’s e-commerce infrastructure by 2027. Asda, currently navigating a period of sales weakness under TDR Capital and Mohsin Issa, hopes to reverse a market share decline that has seen its standing slip to 11.5%. For Ocado, securing these contracts is vital as the company moves away from mutual exclusivity agreements in international markets, including its high-profile shift with Kroger in the United States.
