Michael Biopic Hits $1 Billion Milestone as Sequel Rumors Swirl

John Branca, the longtime executor of Michael Jackson’s estate, celebrated a historic box office achievement this week as the biopic Michael officially surpassed $1 billion in global ticket sales. The film has now eclipsed Bohemian Rhapsody and Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biographical motion picture of all time.

Spotted in Beverly Hills alongside his wife, model and entrepreneur Kristina Tuckute, Branca signaled that the project's massive financial success may be the catalyst for future installments. While he stopped short of confirming a follow-up, he acknowledged the public demand for more. Branca noted that while nothing is set, the prospect of producing the first-ever sequel to a billion-dollar biopic remains an intriguing possibility.

The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Graham King, features Jaafar Jackson in the title role. Branca praised the performances of the entire cast, specifically highlighting Jaafar Jackson, Colman Domingo, Nia Long, and Miles Teller, who portrays Branca himself. Fuqua, whose background includes influential music videos for Prince and Stevie Wonder, has consistently described the film as a deeply personal project. The director credits the late singer with helping him navigate his own career by defying industry expectations and refusing to be categorized solely as a Black artist.
