Contra Costa County Workers Secure Strike Mandate

Over 90 percent of 2,000 Teamsters Local 856 members have voted to authorize a strike, signaling a potential shutdown of critical services across Contra Costa County. The move follows the expiration of their labor contract on June 30 and months of stalled bargaining over compensation gaps compared to neighboring jurisdictions.

The bargaining unit encompasses more than 250 distinct job classifications, ranging from health services and licensed vocational nursing to general maintenance staff. Union leadership contends that current pay scales fail to keep pace with regional standards, hindering the county's ability to retain qualified personnel. Matt Finnegan, the union's chief negotiator, stated that the strike authorization serves as a push for a long-term plan to rectify these existing financial inequities.

While the mandate grants the union the power to halt operations, the primary goal remains reaching a settlement that avoids a countywide service disruption. Both parties are scheduled to return to the bargaining table on July 28 to address the impasse. Teamsters Local 856, representing over 20,000 members across California, maintains that the current compensation structure undervalues the essential staff members responsible for maintaining public infrastructure and healthcare systems.
