Florida Faces Record-Breaking Year for Child Drownings

With 74 child drownings recorded across Florida so far in 2026, healthcare providers and local officials are issuing a desperate plea for heightened vigilance. The state is currently on track to surpass 2025, which remains the deadliest year for pediatric drownings in Florida history.

Community leaders and medical experts gathered at the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center in Fort Lauderdale this week to confront a grim trend. Despite repeated public awareness campaigns, the frequency of these preventable tragedies continues to climb, with 15 deaths reported in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties alone. Experts emphasize that drowning is often silent and can occur in less than a minute, even when adults are nearby.

"The heartbreaking reality is that we are standing here again because children are still dying," said Malvina Duncan, injury prevention coordinator at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. The urgency of the situation was underscored by personal testimony from parents like Ana Nguyen, who lost her daughter in 2011. Health officials are now calling for a multi-layered approach to safety, including constant adult supervision, four-sided pool fencing, and early formal swim training. As Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis noted, learning to swim is a fundamental skill that should not be dictated by a family’s income or zip code.
