Ellison dismisses Vance’s DOJ referral as political theater

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is pushing back against Vice President JD Vance, who recently referred both Ellison and Governor Tim Walz to the Department of Justice. The referral follows a House GOP report alleging the two Democrats knowingly allowed federal fraud to persist, a claim Ellison calls a calculated political stunt.

Ellison labeled the move an attempt by the current administration to weaponize government machinery against political adversaries while shielding its own allies. He argued the referral serves to distract from actual governance, diminishing public trust in institutions. The controversy centers on a House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform report claiming state leadership failed to halt widespread fraud in federally funded social services.

This escalation is the latest in a series of confrontations between the Trump administration and Minnesota officials. Earlier this year, the DOJ subpoenaed top state leadership regarding an investigation into alleged efforts to impede Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. Governor Walz’s office has consistently characterized these federal actions as a campaign of retribution, noting that Minnesota has already implemented structural reforms, including a new Office of the Inspector General, to address oversight gaps. While House Republicans continue to press the fraud allegations, Democrats on the committee have released a competing report accusing the GOP of targeting Minnesota for political gain.
