High-Performance Yacht Racing Returns to the Detroit Riverfront

Unlike traditional regattas that often play out miles from land, this event prioritizes proximity. Spectators gathered along the Detroit Riverwalk and the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority will have a clear view of the 70-foot racing yachts as crews execute tactical maneuvers and high-speed mark roundings. Central to the weekend is the Port Detroit Sailing Village, a public hub located at the Port Authority. The space functions as an educational center where visitors can engage with maritime exhibits and learn about the sport through partnerships with the Detroit Community Sailing Center and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan. Kent Colpaert, founder of the Detroit Charter Company, describes the initiative as an effort to move beyond mere competition. The goal, according to Colpaert, is to activate the waterfront as a central asset for the city, inspiring a new generation to take interest in the river.

Admission to the races and the village remains free for all attendees throughout the three-day window. The weekend concludes with a championship series on Sunday, followed by an awards presentation. For those interested in the technical side of the sport, the regatta showcases the Santa Cruz 70, a yacht class designed by naval architect Bill Lee, celebrated for its lightweight construction and offshore racing history.
