Norfolk Southern Hits Record Revenue Amid Operational Shift

Norfolk Southern Corporation posted record quarterly revenues of $3.5 billion for the second quarter of 2026, marking an 11% increase over the previous year. Despite rising costs and lingering impacts from the Eastern Ohio incident, the railroad saw improved demand across key freight markets during the three-month period.

The Atlanta-based carrier reported $1.1 billion in income from railway operations, with diluted earnings per share reaching $3.26. When adjusting for restructuring costs, merger-related expenses, and the Eastern Ohio incident, adjusted earnings climbed to $3.52 per share, reflecting a 7% improvement compared to the same quarter in 2025.

CEO Mark George attributed the performance to a disciplined focus on safety and service reliability in a volatile operating environment. While the headline operating ratio stood at 67.6%, the adjusted figure of 65.5% highlights the underlying pressure from fuel expenses and ongoing network investments. As the company moves into the second half of the year, leadership expects to leverage current demand trends to drive shareholder value through consistent execution.
