House GOP Advances $95 Billion Budget Amid Cost-of-Living Crisis

House Republicans pushed a $95 billion budget blueprint through the chamber Wednesday, prioritizing military funding for the ongoing war in Iran and new voter ID requirements. The move comes as millions of American households grapple with rising grocery costs and the fallout from recent cuts to federal food assistance programs.

The budget framework, which passed with opposition from all present Democrats and three GOP members—Thomas Massie, Warren Davidson, and Kevin Kiley—activates a filibuster-proof reconciliation process. This mechanism allows the Republican majority to bypass standard Senate hurdles to enact fiscal policy, including $73 billion earmarked for the military and $10 billion to incentivize stricter state-level voting identification rules.

Critics argue the spending package ignores the domestic economic strain on families. Analysts estimate the war in Iran has already cost the average American household roughly $1,100 in elevated energy and food prices. Recent polling indicates two-thirds of the public now considers groceries unaffordable, a significant increase from 45% before the conflict began. Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) criticized the focus on foreign intervention, asserting that taxpayer dollars should prioritize domestic support rather than funding what he labeled a failed presidential agenda.

In a separate legislative action, the House authorized a $1.15 trillion military budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Reps. Ilhan Omar and Mark Pocan, co-chairs of the Defense Spending Reduction Caucus, condemned the decision to funnel trillions into the Pentagon. They argued that the government should redirect these resources toward affordable housing, healthcare, and education, noting the Pentagon’s consistent failure to pass financial audits.
