Peabody Energy Investors Face Lawsuit Over Centurion Mine Misstatements

A class action lawsuit alleges that Peabody Energy Corporation misled shareholders regarding the production capabilities of its Centurion metallurgical coal mine in Australia. Investors who suffered losses between October 14, 2024, and May 4, 2026, have until August 24, 2026, to apply for the role of lead plaintiff in the ongoing litigation.

The complaint, currently under investigation by the law firm Hagens Berman, centers on claims that Peabody management provided false assurances about the mine's operational readiness. Despite public statements in February 2026 claiming that the installation of final shielding was complete and high-quality coal extraction had commenced, internal mechanical and electrical failures reportedly hampered progress. Plaintiffs contend that leadership was aware of these severe production hurdles while maintaining optimistic financial guidance.

The discrepancy between company projections and operational reality surfaced in two distinct waves. On March 30, 2026, Peabody filed an SEC report slashing first-quarter production targets for the Centurion site from 700,000 tons to 250,000 tons, triggering a nearly 10% drop in share price. A second disclosure on May 5, 2026, revealed further headwinds that lowered the full-year sales outlook by 28%, resulting in an additional 6% decline in stock value.

Reed Kathrein, the partner at Hagens Berman overseeing the investigation, stated that the firm is working to pinpoint the exact timeline of management's knowledge regarding the failed production ramp-up. The firm is also soliciting information from potential whistleblowers who may possess non-public details regarding the company’s internal reporting, noting the possibility of SEC-backed rewards for original information provided during the recovery process.
