The FX5 architecture centers on its 16.6MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor, supported by a BIONZ XR2 chip that integrates dedicated AI processing for subject recognition and tracking. With base ISOs at 800, 4000, and 12,800, the camera provides significant flexibility across varying lighting conditions. Videographers can shoot at 5K 60p or 4.5K 120p, with 4K 240p support slated for a future firmware update. The system also boasts 16+ stops of dynamic range when utilizing its Dual Gain mode.

Internal X-OCN recording serves as the primary codec, offering 16-bit linear raw files that are notably more manageable than traditional RAW or Apple ProRes formats. Physical design improvements include a 3.5-inch 4-axis multi-angle touchscreen and a control layout inspired by the flagship VENICE 2. The unit is equipped with dual CFexpress Type A/SDXC card slots, while connectivity options now feature tri-band Wi-Fi for enhanced stability in professional workflows. For monitoring, the camera introduces advanced tools like focus mapping, false color, and a comprehensive anamorphic de-squeeze suite.
