MiniMed Flex Insulin Pump Now Available to Medicare Beneficiaries

Medicare and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries gained access to the MiniMed Flex system, the company’s most compact, app-controlled insulin delivery device. This expansion allows a broader demographic to utilize automated glucose management technology previously restricted by insurance coverage hurdles, marking a significant shift in the accessibility of advanced diabetes care tools.

The MiniMed Flex is roughly the size of two stacked insulin vials, offering a significantly smaller profile than its predecessors while maintaining a 300-unit capacity. The device utilizes SmartGuard technology to automatically adjust insulin delivery every five minutes, mirroring the performance of the established MiniMed 780G system. For users, this automation reduces the frequency of manual interventions, allowing the device to function discreetly in the background.

Data presented at the 86th American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions suggests that Medicare beneficiaries utilizing SmartGuard technology frequently exceed glycemic targets. Que Dallara, CEO of MiniMed, emphasized that the move aims to alleviate the daily management burden for older patients. Currently, the system supports the Simplera Sync sensor, with compatibility for the Abbott-manufactured Instinct sensor scheduled to arrive later this summer.
