Nunnery’s project, "Regulation of the PPARγ Pathway in Lung Cancer," bypassed traditional animal testing by utilizing advanced three-dimensional human cell-based models. Her research, which earned her one of five spots among 1,700 global competitors, focused on therapeutic compounds within human-derived organoids. By prioritizing human biology over animal subjects, she demonstrated that scientific breakthroughs can be both ethical and effective.
The project roots trace back to the Interdisciplinary Science and Research program at her high school, where she collaborated with researchers at Vanderbilt University. Nunnery credits her mentors, including Dr. Greg Smith, Dr. Nicolas Means, and Dr. Amanda Linkous, for guiding her technical approach. "Studying lung cancer using innovative human organoid models has inspired me to keep human health at the center of innovation," she said.
Dr. Lauren Stein, director of science and research programs at the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS), noted that Nunnery’s work exemplifies the shift toward humane research methodologies. As the only animal advocacy group presenting at the fair since 2002, NAVS selected Nunnery’s project for its combination of high-impact science and ethical rigor. Following her success at the international competition, Nunnery is set to attend Vanderbilt University this fall to further her studies in organoid technology, aging, and oncology.
