Famine Is Now Official in Gaza, Global Experts Confirm

Since the IPC’s May assessment, which projected that half a million Palestinians would face extreme food shortages, the situation has deteriorated rapidly. Intensified bombardments and ground operations have rendered access to food erratic and perilous, with over 1,000 people killed while attempting to reach aid shipments. The proportion of households suffering from extreme hunger has doubled in the last three months, and one in three people now go days without any food consumption.

The Human Cost of the Siege

The crisis has reached a critical threshold for the most vulnerable. According to the IPC and Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 147 people have died from starvation, including 16 children under age five since mid-July. More than 20,000 children have required medical treatment for acute malnutrition, a condition that carries lifelong health consequences. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini described the disaster as entirely man-made, emphasizing that the only solution is a massive, immediate scale-up of aid deliveries. While thousands of trucks remain stalled at the border, the required 62,000 metric tons of monthly staple food are failing to reach the population. Humanitarian organizations, including Oxfam and the International Rescue Committee, have dismissed recent airdrops as a distraction, calling instead for an unconditional ceasefire to break the siege and restore local food production.
