Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez denounced the move as a deceptive tactic, labeling it an attempt to sabotage mail-in voting under the guise of an anti-insider trading initiative. The legislation, which combines the Stop Insider Trading Act with Voter ID mandates, has drawn sharp rebukes from the Congressional Black Caucus. Representative Yvette Clarke, who chairs the caucus, described the bill as a Trojan horse that fails to require lawmakers to divest from current holdings while simultaneously erecting barriers for millions of eligible voters.
The Campaign Legal Center has formally urged lawmakers to reject the proposal, citing its unreasonably narrow list of acceptable identification. Advocacy groups note that the bill disproportionately impacts young people and voters of color who frequently lack the specific documentation required by the new standards. With insufficient safeguards for those incorrectly flagged as ineligible, critics argue the legislation prioritizes restrictive voting protocols over substantive ethics reform.
