The path to this production landmark began in the early 1990s with the development of sensors for the F-22 Raptor’s F119 engine. Since the first production unit shipped in 1997, the technology has transitioned from a specialized innovation to a standard component for high-performance propulsion systems, including the Eurofighter Typhoon’s EJ200 and the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine family.
MetalSCAN sensors identify metallic wear debris within lubricated systems, allowing maintenance crews to shift from scheduled overhauls to condition-based strategies. By providing real-time data on engine health, these sensors help operators increase equipment readiness and reduce lifecycle expenditures. Daniel Obedi, Vice President of Aerospace Platforms at Gastops, noted that the company continues to evolve its portfolio by integrating complementary solutions like ChipCHECK to support both defense and commercial fleets. While the aerospace division reaches this 20,000-unit threshold, the company maintains a broader footprint, having supplied over 50,000 sensors across marine, energy, and industrial sectors since its founding.
