Open Dental Integrates with Kno2 to Bridge Medical and Dental Data

In a milestone for national health infrastructure, Open Dental has become the first dental practice management system to connect with Kno2. This integration links thousands of dental providers to the broader medical care continuum, allowing for the secure, bidirectional exchange of patient information between dental and medical professionals nationwide.

The initiative, supported by CareQuest Innovation Partners, moves dental interoperability from industry theory into practical application. By connecting to Kno2’s federally designated network, dental practices can now access a patient’s medical history, which is vital for managing risks during oral surgery or coordinating care for conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. For the estimated 27 million Americans who visit a dentist but skip annual physician checkups, the dental office now serves as a more effective frontline for identifying broader health concerns.

For practitioners, the integration simplifies workflows by reducing reliance on manual patient reporting for medications or health histories. For instance, a dentist can now verify if a patient is taking GLP-1 medications, allowing for proactive counseling on oral health side effects like dry mouth. Nathan Sparks, CEO of Open Dental, noted that having unified data in one place decreases patient risk and improves overall care quality. As the first platform to achieve this, Open Dental gains a competitive edge while establishing a blueprint for other dental software providers to follow.
