Roboticist Victor Nikhil Antony Receives O'Shaughnessy Fellowship

A Ph.D. candidate at Johns Hopkins University, Antony is shifting the focus of human-robot interaction from controlled environments to everyday settings. His current work involves a tabletop robot designed to assist children with reading in Baltimore charter schools, alongside a project testing cognitive health support in eldercare. These deployments serve a dual purpose: providing tangible assistance while generating unique behavioral data that traditional datasets cannot replicate.

Over the coming year, Antony plans to execute semester-long pilots with teachers to measure academic progress, aiming to amass over 500 hours of interaction data. Jim O'Shaughnessy, founder of the investment firm OSV, identified this research as a critical frontier for the next two decades. For Antony, the fellowship provides the necessary runway to refine the social cues and behavioral layers that will determine whether robots can eventually function as helpful, reliable companions in human spaces.
