BlackRock, Carhartt, Ford and Google Form Alliance to Address Labor Gap

BlackRock, Carhartt, Ford, and Google have launched the Alliance for America's Skilled Trades to confront a deepening national labor crisis. With projections indicating that 2.1 million skilled trade positions could remain vacant by 2030, the coalition aims to revitalize training pipelines and boost economic mobility for millions of workers.

The United States currently faces a critical shortage of electricians, technicians, and builders—roles essential to maintaining the nation's infrastructure, energy, and manufacturing sectors. By pooling resources, the founding members intend to transition workers into high-wage, stable careers that do not require a traditional four-year degree. The initiative focuses on three primary objectives: broadening access to trade exposure, scaling evidence-based apprenticeship programs, and inviting broader industry participation to ensure long-term workforce stability.

Leadership from the participating firms emphasizes that the skills gap represents a national economic hurdle. Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, described the shortage as both a crisis and a generational opportunity for the 95 million Americans who sustain the country's essential industries. To track efficacy and identify regional gaps, the Alliance will collaborate with Burning Glass and Jobs for the Future. This collective effort builds upon existing commitments already active in 30 states, aiming to formalize and expand pathways into sectors that have historically served as the backbone of the American economy.
