With global automotive demand pivoting toward hybrids as EV growth cools, Molicel has introduced its INR-21700-P70X cell. The battery aims to bridge the gap between traditional lithium-ion density and supercapacitor responsiveness, offering 7000 mAh capacity and 340 Wh/kg energy density to meet the rigorous demands of modern hybrid powertrains.

The automotive industry is recalibrating as hybrids capture significant market share, reaching nearly 20% of new vehicle sales in the United States and 24% in Europe. This shift toward HEVs necessitates batteries capable of handling high-frequency, shallow power pulses rather than the deep, sustained discharge cycles typical of battery electric vehicles. Molicel’s new cell addresses this by delivering a 900W peak power duration of 5 seconds and a response time of under 200 microseconds, mirroring the rapid energy absorption and output of supercapacitors.

Beyond performance, the company emphasizes safety and longevity. The cell utilizes single-crystal technology to reduce exothermal heat release by 50%, allowing it to pass the stringent UL9540A thermal runaway evaluation. In endurance testing, the PX series retained 96% capacity after 1,000,000 cycles, a durability profile designed to outlast the vehicle itself. According to Molicel President Casey Shiue, the technology aims to solve the industry's need for burst power without compromising safety or lifespan, positioning the firm as a key supplier for the next generation of hybrid vehicle architectures.
