Amazon Deploys Just Walk Out Tech at 2026 World Cup Stadiums

Beyond the pitch, the 2026 FIFA World Cup served as a massive testing ground for Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology. As fans gathered at venues like Hard Rock Stadium, the automated retail system bypassed traditional checkout lines, allowing spectators to grab refreshments and return to the match without missing the action.

Mandy Grogg, a senior program manager at Amazon, described the integration as a central component of the tournament’s stadium experience. By utilizing a combination of AI, computer vision, and sensor fusion, the system processed tens of millions of transactions globally between June 2024 and May 2025. This deployment underscores Amazon’s pivot from internal grocery use to a broader licensing model for third-party venues.

While Amazon recently replaced Just Walk Out with Dash Carts in its own Fresh grocery stores to offer shoppers more immediate access to receipts and real-time deal tracking, the stadium application highlights the technology’s enduring utility in high-traffic environments. Industry analysts argue this transition represents the standard arc of iterative innovation, where systems initially designed for one retail context find their true potential in others. As the technology matures, it remains a focal point for the 2026 RTIH Innovation Awards, which recognize such shifts in global retail infrastructure.
