PG&E Customers to Receive $72 in Summer Climate Credits

Millions of California households will see automatic relief on their energy bills as the state shifts the timing of its climate credits to coincide with peak summer usage. PG&E customers are set to receive two $36.18 credits across their August and September statements, totaling $72.36 in direct assistance.

The adjustment follows a directive from the California Legislature, which tasked the California Public Utilities Commission with realigning credit distribution to help residents manage seasonal spikes in electricity demand. While residential electric credits are now arriving during the warmer months, the state plans to shift residential natural gas credits to February starting in 2027 to better offset winter heating costs.

These credits represent a portion of the state’s Cap-and-Invest Program, which aims to lower carbon emissions. Since the initiative began in 2014, PG&E households have received nearly $1,200 in total credits. Beyond this temporary relief, the utility notes that current bundled electric bills for typical usage are roughly $25 lower per month than they were two years ago, following a series of rate adjustments earlier this year. Customers seeking further ways to manage summer energy costs are encouraged to utilize PG&E’s online rate comparison tools and energy efficiency programs, such as GoGreen Home Financing and The Switch Is On.
