Siemens acquires Precision Innovations to accelerate AI-driven chip design

Siemens has signed a definitive agreement to acquire San Diego-based startup Precision Innovations, aiming to integrate AI-powered chip planning into its electronic design automation portfolio. The move addresses the mounting complexity of system-on-a-chip architectures by enabling faster feasibility analysis and design optimization earlier in the development cycle.

Founded in 2019, Precision Innovations leverages the open-source OpenROAD framework to help semiconductor teams evaluate design trade-offs before committing to final layouts. By incorporating this technology into its Digital Design Creation software, Siemens plans to offer a more comprehensive, end-to-end flow that spans architecture through to full silicon lifecycle management.

Ankur Gupta, executive vice president of IC Portfolio at Siemens EDA, noted that the integration will allow customers to navigate increasing architectural complexity with greater efficiency. Tom Spyrou, CEO of Precision Innovations, stated that the acquisition provides the scale necessary to bring AI-driven planning to a wider range of semiconductor developers. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, though financial terms remain undisclosed.
