SMBC Aviation Capital Places Record Order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX Jets

At the Farnborough International Airshow, global lessor SMBC Aviation Capital committed to purchasing 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The deal, which includes 60 of the high-capacity 737-10 variant and 40 737-8 jets, marks the largest single order for the 737-10 model ever placed by an aviation finance firm.

This acquisition expands SMBC Aviation Capital's total 737 MAX portfolio to 450 aircraft. CEO Peter Barrett noted that the move addresses a clear shift in market preference toward the 737-10, which offers superior per-seat economics by accommodating up to 230 passengers. The lessor intends to use these assets to diversify its fleet and support airline customers seeking more fuel-efficient, long-range narrowbody options. Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, framed the deal as a testament to the reliability and versatility of the MAX family. With global passenger traffic projected to rise by 4% annually over the next twenty years, lessors are aggressively expanding their single-aisle holdings. To date, industry lessors have ordered more than 1,450 737 MAX jets, accounting for a significant fifth of Boeing's current backlog for the program.
