Speaking at a Fanboy Expo panel, Wilson addressed the common fan theory that a new film could center on Matilda’s daughter. She dismissed the premise, noting that the protagonist’s entire arc was defined by overcoming adversity through education. She reasoned that a character who gained power specifically to protect herself would likely raise a child in an environment where such defensive measures were unnecessary.

Beyond narrative concerns, Wilson expressed difficulty imagining a romantic life for the character, questioning who could possibly be considered a suitable partner for her. Her reluctance stands in contrast to director Danny DeVito, who stated in 2019 that he had long harbored hopes for a sequel featuring Matilda as a parent, though he admitted the window for that specific vision had largely closed. While the 1996 film struggled at the box office, earning $47 million against a $36 million budget, it eventually cemented its status as a staple of 1990s family cinema through home media and television syndication.
