Cellphone Footage Complicates Narrative of Deadly ICE Shooting

A recording from the personal phone of ICE agent Jonathan Ross has surfaced, capturing the final moments before he shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis. The footage shows Good steering her vehicle away from the officer, contradicting claims that she deliberately attempted to run him down during the Wednesday encounter.

The video, published by Alpha News, shows Ross circling the car while recording on his phone. Good is seen smiling and telling the officer she is not angry, while her wife, Becca Good, questions his approach. As other officers move in to demand she exit the vehicle, Good turns the wheel to the right—away from the agent—and attempts to drive off. Ross, remaining on his feet as the car passes, draws his weapon and fires multiple shots, leading to a fatal crash into a utility pole.

Legal experts are divided on the implications. Aaron Reichlin-Melnick of the American Immigration Council noted the video challenges the administration’s claim that the agent’s life was in immediate danger. However, he warned that legal thresholds for police use of force remain low. Meanwhile, former FBI agent Michael Feinberg criticized Ross for recording the interaction, calling the decision the height of unprofessionalism. Despite the visual evidence, Vice President JD Vance maintained on social media that the agent acted in self-defense, a characterization legal scholars continue to dispute.
