James Gray’s Paper Tiger to Open the 64th New York Film Festival

This project marks Gray’s fourth appearance at the festival, following previous selections like The Immigrant and Armageddon Time. The story centers on a former police officer, played by Driver, whose get-rich-quick plan spirals out of control, threatening the safety of his brother, Irwin, and his sister-in-law, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson. NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim described the film as a career-best achievement for the director, while Gray noted the work is deeply personal and rooted in his New York City upbringing.

Public ticket sales begin September 15, with cast members expected to attend the premiere. While the production reunites Driver and Johansson, their onscreen time is limited; Johansson recently remarked that she would have welcomed more scenes with her former Marriage Story co-star. The film’s tension is mirrored by the intensity of the performances, with Teller describing the project as an exploration of long-held family grievances. The festival debut follows recent public scrutiny surrounding Driver, who declined to comment at Cannes regarding allegations made in Lena Dunham’s memoir, Famesick.
