The research initiative targets plantations operated by PT.PAR, where the team will develop a carbon mapping system to quantify storage capacity based on soil properties. By applying biochar—a carbon-rich material capable of long-term soil stabilization—the partners aim to identify optimal application zones and establish a scalable model for carbon-credit integration. This marks a significant field demonstration of biochar technology within a major industrial palm operation, aligning with POSCO International’s broader strategy to expand biomass utilization and renewable energy.
Leading the effort, Professors Yong Sik Ok and Jay Hyuk Rhee are bridging environmental science with commercial ESG frameworks. Prof. Ok identifies soil management as the pivot point between emission sources and carbon sinks, while Prof. Rhee emphasizes the project’s role as a benchmark for translating laboratory-scale carbon research into resilient global business mechanisms. Attorney Oh Ji-Heon of ONE Law Partners noted that the project integrates legal and business oversight to ensure the resulting climate value remains measurable and compliant with international standards.
