The casting news, which originated from social media account My Time To Shine Hello, has sparked intense speculation regarding the creative direction of the franchise. Insider Apocalyptic Horseman, who initially corroborated the reports, later issued a correction clarifying that Driver is being eyed for the role of Nathaniel Essex, also known as Mister Sinister. The character is a Victorian-era scientist defined by his obsession with genetic engineering and his long-standing, often parasitic, alliance with the mutant Apocalypse.
This potential casting creates an intriguing thematic link to Driver’s former Star Wars co-star, Oscar Isaac. Isaac famously portrayed Apocalypse in the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse, a character whose history is inextricably tied to Sinister’s origins. The two actors share a professional history spanning back to 2013's Inside Llewyn Davis and the Star Wars sequel trilogy. While fans remain divided on the suitability of the casting—with some calling for the return of previous X-Men actors—the potential for a villainous turn for Driver marks a significant shift for the actor, who has previously expressed hesitation regarding long-term, multi-film franchise commitments. Meanwhile, the status of other key roles remains fluid, with reports suggesting the studio is actively scouting younger talent, including Bill Skarsgard for Professor Xavier and Cooper Hoffman for Cyclops.
