U.S. Air Travel Sales Reach Record $58.8 Billion Mid-Year High

Travelers are absorbing significantly higher costs to maintain their flying habits, pushing U.S. agency-booked air ticket sales to a record $58.8 billion in the first half of 2026. This 12% revenue jump over the previous year persists despite a modest 4% increase in the total volume of passenger trips.

Airlines Reporting Corp. data confirms that demand remains resilient even as the average ticket price climbed to $614, a 13% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Domestic and international travel both saw steady growth, rising 4% and 3% respectively, signaling that air transit remains a primary fixture in consumer spending despite the inflationary environment.

Steve Solomon, ARC's Chief Commercial Officer, noted that travelers are actively adjusting their planning to accommodate the higher pricing landscape. The momentum held through June, which saw $9 billion in sales—a 19% increase over June 2025—even as average ticket prices surged to $629. While premium class fares reached an average of $1,423, economy class tickets also saw a 16% year-over-year increase, settling at $573. Meanwhile, the industry continues to integrate new booking standards, with NDC transactions accounting for 21.6% of all processed activity.
