Uber to acquire Delivery Hero in $14.8 billion quick commerce deal

Uber has confirmed a $14.8 billion acquisition of German delivery giant Delivery Hero, a strategic expansion designed to consolidate its footprint across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. The massive deal aims to scale the company's food delivery network while facing immediate scrutiny from global antitrust regulators.

To mitigate regulatory hurdles, Delivery Hero has simultaneously struck a $1.6 billion agreement with investment firm SSW Partners. This secondary deal involves offloading operations in 14 specific markets where the two companies currently face significant operational overlap. By shedding these segments, Uber hopes to streamline the integration of its existing food delivery infrastructure with Delivery Hero’s established market positions.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the merger will nearly double the number of markets where the company provides both mobility and delivery services. Delivery Hero CEO Niklas Östberg described the transition as a natural evolution of the company’s 15-year history, noting that the partnership secures the firm's competitive future in a sector defined by the necessity of scale. Kristin Skogen Lund, Chair of the Delivery Hero supervisory board, confirmed the board’s full support for the transaction, emphasizing the goal of preserving the company's local brand strengths under the new ownership structure.
