House Democrats Demand Independent Probe Into Recent ICE Killings

Nearly 200 House Democrats are calling for an independent investigation into the fatal shootings of two immigrants by federal agents in Maine and Texas. Lawmakers argue the victims were not the targets of the operations, fueling concerns over the safety of community members and the integrity of ICE's internal reporting.

The letter, spearheaded by Representatives Chellie Pingree and Sylvia Garcia, demands that the Department of Homeland Security cease any removal proceedings against witnesses to the Houston incident. Lawmakers point to a pattern of behavior, noting that since the start of Donald Trump's second term, ICE agents have shot at least 22 people, with six fatalities. They highlighted that in previous instances, agency claims of self-defense or threats were later contradicted by evidence, leading to dismissed cases and a total collapse of public trust.

Beyond the legislative push, faith leaders and labor advocates are joining the outcry, characterizing the agency's actions as a systemic failure. The pressure follows a separate incident in Florida, where an unidentified man died fleeing agents at a gas station. Despite the mounting death toll, the administration has signaled its intent to maintain current enforcement tactics, including the controversial practice of stopping vehicles, which critics argue is endangering lives and widening the scope of the government's deportation agenda.
