Connected Nation targets digital literacy with 25-hour global broadcast

On September 24, 2026, the nonprofit Connected Nation will launch a 25-hour live stream marathon in a bid to secure a Guinness World Record for the longest internet literacy broadcast. The event aims to provide free, accessible training to help bridge the widening digital divide for participants across the globe.

The initiative, titled "25 Hours. One Connected World.," serves as a centerpiece for the organization’s 25th-anniversary celebration. Rather than existing as a one-time publicity stunt, the marathon functions as a repository for future education. Facilitators from partners including Fizzics Education, human-i-t, and the Australian Virtual Astronaut will record sessions covering topics ranging from AI utilization to online safety. These resources will remain available to the public at no cost after the event concludes.

Heather Gate, Executive Vice President of Digital Transformation at Connected Nation, noted that the record attempt is secondary to the long-term goal of building lasting digital infrastructure within underserved communities. The broadcast requires a minimum of 50 concurrent viewers throughout the duration to qualify for the record, ensuring that at least 1,250 people receive direct instruction during the live feed.

Tom Ferree, Chairman and CEO of Connected Nation, emphasized that shifting job requirements and the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into daily life make digital proficiency a foundational necessity rather than a luxury. Backed by lead collaborator AT&T and a coalition of education and technology nonprofits, the event functions as a call to action for educators and community leaders to host viewing events and integrate these materials into their local workforce development programs.
