Microsoft and 3M Forge Partnership to Scale AI Data Infrastructure

Microsoft is integrating 3M’s proprietary Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) technology into its Azure data centers, marking the first time a hyperscale cloud provider has deployed this hardware to boost network reliability. The collaboration also embeds Microsoft’s AI platforms into 3M’s internal operations to automate business processes.

The integration of EBO technology addresses a persistent challenge in high-density data environments: physical connection stability. Unlike traditional fiber connectors that require direct contact and frequent cleaning, 3M’s interface utilizes expanded beams to remain resilient against dust and routine handling. This shift allows Microsoft to accelerate deployment timelines and maintain consistent signal performance as it scales infrastructure for generative AI workloads.

Simultaneously, 3M is leveraging the partnership to overhaul its internal enterprise functions. A specialized Microsoft Frontier Company team is working with 3M’s Global Business Services to automate order management. By deploying AI agents to handle credit checks and delinquency assessments, 3M aims to replace manual tasks with streamlined, auditable workflows. According to Jon Van Wyck, 3M’s chief strategy officer, this dual-track approach—optimizing internal enterprise efficiency while hardening physical data center foundations—serves as the blueprint for the company’s broader digital transformation strategy.
