Pinwheel Launches Screen-Free Landline to Curb Childhood Tech Overload

With 78% of U.S. households abandoning traditional phone jacks, Austin-based Pinwheel is bringing the landline back for the digital native generation. The company’s new voice-only home phone for children aged 5-12 aims to replace screen-based communication with verbal conversation, eliminating the distractions of apps, social media, and constant notifications.

The device operates over Wi-Fi, bypassing the need for legacy cable providers or physical phone jacks. Parents maintain control through the Pinwheel Caregiver Portal, which allows them to curate a safe contact list, effectively blocking spam and robocalls. This centralized management system integrates with the company’s existing ecosystem of smartwatches and mobile phones, providing a tiered path for children as they grow.

CEO Dane Witbeck developed the hardware to address a growing concern regarding the loss of verbal communication skills in children. By removing cameras and text-based interfaces, the phone forces a focus on intentional, one-on-one dialogue. The Spark model retails for $68, while the Classic version costs $79, with monthly service plans starting at $6.99 for external connectivity. Every unit includes 911 access, and families can manage usage schedules to ensure devices remain inactive during school or sleep hours.
