Tesco launches pilot of Simbe’s Tally shelf-scanning robot

Tesco has joined the growing ranks of UK grocers testing Simbe’s Tally, an autonomous shelf-scanning robot currently patrolling a single store. The pilot program, which aims to improve stock accuracy and inventory management, follows a similar trial conducted by Morrisons and a successful multi-store rollout by SPAR Austria.

The Tally robot maneuvers through aisles to scan shelves for inventory gaps and pricing errors, transmitting real-time data directly to staff mobile devices. While the technology promises to streamline replenishment and reduce manual inspection rounds, public reception remains mixed; a recent Reddit post noted that shoppers kept a cautious five-foot distance from the machine during its rounds.

In Austria, the deployment has already moved beyond the experimental phase. SPAR Austria is expanding the use of Tally to six locations following a five-month trial, reporting that the automation frees employees to focus on customer service rather than manual stock checks. The robot is designed to navigate safely around shoppers while automatically deleting any captured image data of individuals to ensure privacy compliance.
