Jay-Z Defends Three-Hour Delay at Yankee Stadium Residency Finale

Thousands of fans endured a three-hour wait at Yankee Stadium on the final night of Jay-Z’s residency, only to learn the delay was a calculated security measure. Faced with 10,000 people pushing to enter after doors were sealed, the rapper refused to perform until officials could guarantee the crowd's safety.

The atmosphere at the Bronx venue shifted from anticipation to anxiety as the midnight start time approached. Jay-Z addressed the audience immediately upon taking the stage, explaining that a surge at the gates threatened to cause a trampling incident. By holding the show, he prioritized the welfare of the attendees both inside and outside the stadium, an account later corroborated by a joint statement from Roc Nation, the Yankees, and Live Nation, which credited the NYPD for preventing a potential disaster.

Despite the rocky start, the marathon performance concluded at 2:45 a.m. and proved to be the residency’s most star-studded event. Rihanna made a rare live appearance, joining Jay-Z for “Run This Town,” while Beyoncé, Usher, Teyana Taylor, and Pharrell Williams also took the stage. The three-night run, marking the anniversaries of Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint, served as a high-profile return for the artist, who has not toured extensively since 2017. With international dates in London, Paris, and Los Angeles on the horizon, the residency functioned as both a celebration of his catalog and a prelude to his upcoming documentary project directed by Rick Rubin.
