Nolan Compares Samantha Morton’s Odyssey Performance to Heath Ledger

Christopher Nolan has drawn a rare parallel between Samantha Morton’s portrayal of Circe in his upcoming epic, The Odyssey, and Heath Ledger’s iconic turn as the Joker in The Dark Knight. The director credited Morton with acting as the film's essential fulcrum, noting her performance left the production crew visibly moved.

Nolan revealed that he specifically structured the shooting schedule around Morton’s availability to secure her involvement. The director recalled a poignant moment on set following one of Morton’s takes, when the crew spontaneously erupted into applause—a reaction he noted had not occurred since the filming of his 2008 Batman feature. Morton, 49, described the experience as life-changing, admitting the recognition from a filmmaker she considers a master moved her to tears. The actress emphasized that roles of this caliber are rare, and the opportunity allowed her to push the boundaries of her craft.

While the film has faced pre-release scrutiny regarding casting choices and creative departures from the source material, Nolan dismissed the criticism as irrelevant. Drawing on his decade-long experience with the Dark Knight trilogy, he argued that early public discourse often lacks the context of the finished work. The director maintained that his primary responsibility is to interpret the source text with sincerity, regardless of external noise. The Odyssey, which also stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Zendaya, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical and IMAX release on July 17.
