James Maslow reveals the Big Time Rush song he hates to perform

For James Maslow, the transition from fictional television band to real-world musical act came with a specific, recurring headache. During a recent appearance on the Joe Vulpis Podcast, the actor admitted that he and his bandmates still struggle to perform the show's original theme song live.

The track was never intended for concert stages, Maslow explained, noting its inherently cheesy composition. While the group—comprising Maslow, Kendall Schmidt, Carlos PenaVega, and Logan Henderson—has learned to appreciate the song over time, they typically avoid performing it in full, opting instead to bury it within mashups or truncated medleys.

The path to the band's success was anything but guaranteed. Maslow recounted the uncertainty surrounding the show’s origins, including a costly, abandoned pilot filmed without Schmidt. Even after the final cast was assembled, the group faced friction with Nickelodeon executives who initially viewed them as actors playing musicians rather than a legitimate band. Maslow credits the group’s persistence for earning them the creative control necessary to bridge the gap between their scripted roles and their actual musical aspirations.
