The WP15 engine, which features a 14.6-liter displacement, generates 600 horsepower and 2,800 N•m of torque. Engineers achieved a maximum brake thermal efficiency of 46.8% through a spark-ignited architecture designed specifically for hydrogen fuel. The certification process involved rigorous stress testing, including cold starts, idle cycles, and transient variable load changes to ensure the unit performs reliably under real-world conditions.
Beyond performance, the engine maintains 90% component commonality with existing heavy-duty platforms. This design choice streamlines production and maintenance while lowering barriers to retrofitting traditional fleets. By accepting lower-purity hydrogen, the system also reduces operational fuel costs. Weichai Power intends to deploy the technology across mining dump trucks, port equipment, and long-haul logistics as part of a broader push to decarbonize heavy industrial sectors.
