EQT Targets AI Expansion With Acquisition of Copia Power

Energy capacity has become the primary bottleneck for artificial intelligence, prompting EQT Infrastructure VII to acquire Copia Power from Carlyle. The deal secures a platform managing over 2.6 gigawatts of operational energy assets and a massive development pipeline designed to colocate power generation directly with data center loads.

Copia Power operates at the intersection of energy and digital infrastructure, developing campuses that merge high-voltage transmission, power generation, and data center connectivity. By integrating these elements at a single interconnection point, the company aims to bypass the grid congestion that currently stalls hyperscale development across the United States. Its portfolio currently includes more than 25 gigawatts of solar and storage assets alongside 7 gigawatts of natural gas generation, providing a critical buffer for AI-driven compute demand.

For EQT, the acquisition acts as a strategic anchor for its broader North American portfolio, which already includes Zayo, EdgeConneX, and Cypress Creek Energy. EQT plans to leverage Copia’s integrated model to streamline the deployment of power for digital infrastructure, effectively offering utilities and hyperscalers a faster path to grid stability. Ray Henger, CEO of Copia Power, noted that the partnership will accelerate their ability to solve the fundamental challenge of aligning large-scale load with available generation. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
